Recovering in Virtual Reality

December 18, 2024 | Sportal Editorial

Rehab is usually boring, painful, and repetitive. Enter VR. By immersing an injured athlete in a virtual game, you can trick the brain into focusing on the task rather than the pain.

Gamification of Recovery

Imagine a soccer player recovering from ACL surgery. Instead of doing 50 leg lifts in a gym, put them in a VR simulation where they have to kick virtual balls to score points. The physical motion is the same, but the psychological engagement is completely different. Studies show compliance rates skyrocket when rehab is gamified.

"VR doesn't just heal the body; it keeps the competitive mind sharp even when the athlete is sidelined."
