Cooperative learning in physical education means structuring lessons so students learn in small groups, depend on each other to succeed, and are each held responsible for their own learning. Done well, it raises skill levels and builds teamwork in the same lesson.
The five elements of cooperative learning
- Positive interdependence: the group succeeds only if every member does.
- Individual accountability: each student's learning is checked.
- Promotive interaction: students help, encourage and coach each other.
- Social skills: communication, leadership and conflict resolution are taught directly.
- Group processing: groups reflect on what worked and what to improve.
Cooperative learning structures for PE
- Jigsaw: each student masters one part of a skill and teaches it. See our jigsaw model guide.
- Pair-check-perform: partners coach each other with a skill checklist, then perform for another pair.
- Learning teams: mixed-ability teams stay together for a unit and track progress together.
- Think-share-perform: students plan a tactic individually, share it in their group, then test it in a game.
- Co-op challenges: problem-solving tasks (for example, the whole group crosses an area using limited equipment) that need everyone's input.
Benefits for students
- Better skill learning through peer feedback and more practice time.
- Greater inclusion of less confident or lower-skilled students.
- Stronger social and emotional skills.
- Higher enjoyment and motivation, which supports lifelong activity.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling ordinary group work "cooperative learning" without individual accountability.
- Groups that are too large (keep to 3-5).
- Skipping the reflection step at the end of the lesson.
- Not teaching students how to give useful feedback.
Fitting it into your curriculum
Cooperative learning works best as part of a planned, progressive programme. Sportal's physical literacy curriculum for schools builds these structures into its units. For background on how PE relates to the wider school curriculum, see our NEP 2020 and physical education guide.
