Sports Degrees for North East Students — what the region offers, and when it is worth leaving

If you are from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh or Sikkim and you want to build a career in sport, the first thing to say is that the North East has real options and you should look at them first. This page names them, including the ones that are better than us.

The second thing to say is that leaving is normal. Roughly three in four students who migrate out of the North East for higher education go to mainland India, and Manipur has the highest out-migration rate in the region, followed by Mizoram. If you have already decided to study outside, you are not doing anything unusual.

What follows is the honest version: every route we could verify inside the region, the one real difference between a B.P.Ed and a B.P.E.S., what studying at Bhimtal in Uttarakhand actually involves from 2,000 km away, and the cases where staying home is the better answer.

What Studying at Bhimtal Involves From the North East

The campus is at Bhimtal in Nainital district, Uttarakhand — roughly 2,000 km from Guwahati. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, about an hour away, and Pantnagar is the nearest airport; most students route through Delhi

It is residential: separate secured hostels for boys and girls, boundary walls, CCTV, security staff and wardens you can actually reach. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are provided

Bhimtal is a small lake town in the Kumaon hills, not a metro. Cold winters, hill weather, and a pace closer to a hill town in Meghalaya or Nagaland than to Delhi or Bangalore

Admission is on your Class 12 result from any recognised board, any stream, with no entrance exam and no physical fitness test — which is the clearest practical difference from the Gauhati University-affiliated route

Every fee is published on this site including hostel and one-time charges, so you can total the cost before you speak to anybody. Add travel home at least twice a year to that total honestly

The thing we will not pretend about: the first degree intake is the 2027-28 session, so there is no student body here yet and no North East seniors to call. If that matters to you — and for many families it reasonably does — the regional options above have it and we do not

Sports and Physical Education Routes Inside the North East

Checked in November 2026 from state and institutional sources. Seats, intakes and entry rules change every session, so confirm any of these with the institution itself rather than trusting this table — including where it is flattering to them.

  • Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University, Chabua, Dibrugarh (Assam)Assam’s own state sports university. Four-year B.P.Ed (Honours) after Class 12 and a five-year integrated M.P.Ed, built on NEP 2020. If you want a sports degree from a state sports university in your own region, this is the strongest answer on this page and it is not us.
  • Regional College of Physical Education, Panisagar (Tripura)Government college running B.P.Ed, and it RESERVES SEATS FOR NORTH EAST STATES — a 2023-25 notice allotted 4 to Meghalaya and 7 to Nagaland. Government fees, reserved access, inside the region. We cannot match any of those three things.
  • Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education (Assam)Four-year B.P.E.S. affiliated to Gauhati University, with NCTE recognition for its B.P.Ed. Admission is by entrance test, physical fitness test and interview — the closest thing in the region to the degree we offer, with a harder door.
  • ICFAI / Indian Institute, TripuraB.P.Ed, with North East students counted as domicile candidates and selection by interview. A domicile advantage no institution outside the region can give you.
  • Shillong College (Meghalaya)Introduced a Bachelor’s in Physical Education and helped bring the subject into Higher Secondary in the state. We could not confirm the current intake, so ask them directly.
  • Your own state sports directorateNagaland’s Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports has previously sponsored students onto a B.P.E.S. course outside the region — a past notice reserved 10 seats with a 45% Class 12 cut-off. If your state runs something similar this session, it is cheaper than anything on this page. Ask before you apply anywhere.

If a government or state-university route in the list above fits what you want, take it. It will almost always cost less than a private programme, and we would rather you went there than took on debt to prove a point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best sports college for North East students?

It depends on what you want to do, and honestly the answer is often inside the region. For a teaching career, Sri Sri Aniruddhadeva Sports University in Assam or the Regional College of Physical Education at Panisagar in Tripura give you a B.P.Ed — the qualification a government PE teacher post actually requires — at government or state-university cost, close to home. For coaching science, performance analysis, sports management or sports data, a B.P.E.S. is the relevant degree and there are fewer options inside the region; that is the case where looking outside makes sense. Compare the published total cost of each before deciding anything.

Can I get a sports degree admission without an entrance exam?

Yes, here. Admission is on your Class 12 result from any recognised board in any stream, with no entrance exam, no physical fitness test and no interview requirement. That is a real difference from the main B.P.E.S. route in Assam, where admission runs through an entrance test, a physical fitness test and a personal interview. Whether that matters to you depends on whether you would clear those — not everyone wants a fitness test deciding an academic admission.

Is there a hostel, and is it safe for a student coming from the North East?

The campus is residential, with separate secured hostels for boys and girls, boundary walls, CCTV, security staff and wardens who are reachable. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are provided. We will not oversell this: the first degree intake is the 2027-28 session, so there is no student body here yet and nobody from the region you can ring to ask what it is really like. What we can do is arrange a call with the warden before you decide, and answer anything specific straight.

How far is the campus from Guwahati, and how do students travel?

Roughly 2,000 km. The campus is at Bhimtal in Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, about an hour from campus, and the nearest airport is Pantnagar; most students from the region route through Delhi by air or train and then travel on to Kathgodam. Budget for travel home at least twice a year when you are totalling the cost — it is a real number and leaving it out of the comparison would be dishonest.

Does my state government sponsor sports degrees outside the North East?

Some have. Nagaland’s Directorate of Youth Resources and Sports has previously invited applications for a B.P.E.S. course at a college outside the region, with reserved seats and a 45% Class 12 requirement. That was a past session and we cannot tell you what is running now. Check with your own state’s sports or youth affairs directorate before applying anywhere privately — a sponsored seat will cost you less than anything we offer.

Will a degree from outside the North East be valid back home?

Yes. The degree is awarded by Mind Power University, Bhimtal, Nainital, a State Private University established under the Uttarakhand Private Universities (Amendment) Act, 2024 and listed as such by the Governor of Uttarakhand. A degree from a State Private University is a valid Indian degree anywhere in the country. What it qualifies you for depends on the post rather than the state — and for a government PE teaching post, that means a B.P.Ed, not a B.P.E.S.

I trained at a Khelo India centre. Does that help my admission?

It helps your case and it does not guarantee a seat — no sports quota anywhere does, and treat any institution that tells you otherwise with suspicion. There are over 150 Khelo India Centres across the North East training several thousand athletes, and sustained training is genuinely relevant preparation for a sports science degree. Tell us what you have trained in and at what level when you enquire, and we will tell you straight whether it changes anything.
