Golf coaching in India has been a certification profession, not a degree one — the NGAI and the PGA of India, not a university. Here is how the routes actually work, what changed in 2027, and what nobody will tell you about the pay.
Search for golf coaching courses in India and you will get academies. Nineteen results across the two most obvious searches, and every one of them is a golf academy, a club or a resort. Not one is a college. That is not an accident of ranking — it is an accurate picture of how the profession has been structured here.
If you want to coach golf in India, it is worth understanding that structure before you pay anyone anything.
The Certification Route, Which Is the Established One
Golf coaching in India is certified, not degreed. Two bodies matter.
- The National Golf Academy of India (NGAI) — run by the Indian Golf Union, and the official body for certifying golf teaching professionals in the country. It was set up in 2004 with support from the R&A and operates a graded system, from entry category through to Master Professional, with teaching licences that require renewal.
- The PGA of India — founded in 1988, with instructor training among its stated objectives, and its own certification tracks for teaching and coaching.
Both award certifications. Neither awards a degree, and that distinction is the single most important thing to understand about this career, because it determines what doors the qualification opens and which ones it leaves shut.
What a Certification Does and Does Not Get You
A certification is the right qualification for working inside golf. Clubs and academies recognise it, it is what a teaching professional is expected to hold, and it is the faster and cheaper route.
What it is not is a degree. It will not satisfy an employer whose job description says "bachelor’s degree required", it will not admit you to a master’s programme, and it will not qualify you for a government teaching post. If your plan is entirely inside golf, that may never matter. If you might want to move into sports administration, teaching, or management more broadly, it matters a great deal — and people usually discover this several years in.
What Changed in 2027
From the Academic Year 2027 intake there is a university route: a three-year B.Sc. in Golf Performance and Coaching, awarded by Mind Power University, Bhimtal, and run in partnership with Axiom, Netherlands. There is also a one-year Diploma in Golf Management for the operations and business side — clubs, courses, academies and events.
As far as we can establish, no Indian university has awarded a degree in golf coaching before. We looked, repeatedly, and found academies and certification bodies but no university programme. Golf degrees do exist abroad — in the United Kingdom, the United States, and in Japan from 2026 — but not here. If you know of an earlier Indian one, tell us and we will correct this.
That is not an argument that the degree is automatically better than a certification. It is a different instrument. The degree gives you a recognised bachelor’s qualification alongside the coaching training; the certification gives you faster entry and costs less.
What the Job Actually Is
Golf in India is small, and it is worth being honest about that. The clubs are concentrated in a handful of cities, the playing population is narrow, and almost nobody is paid to play. What there is, is a professionalising industry around the game.
- Teaching professional at a club or driving range — individual lessons, group clinics, member coaching.
- Junior and academy programme coach — running a structured pathway for young players, which is where most of the growth is.
- Performance and technical coaching — swing analysis, launch monitors, video, increasingly data-led.
- Club and academy operations — the business side: memberships, tournaments, retail, course management. This is the Diploma’s territory rather than the coaching degree’s.
About the Pay, Honestly
You will find pages claiming an average salary for a golf coach in India. We have not found a reliable published figure, and we are not going to repeat someone else’s invented one to fill a gap on this page.
What is true is that the range is wide and depends on things within your control: whether you coach at a club or run your own programme, whether you hold a recognised certification, whether you have built a junior pathway that retains families. The best information available to you is a conversation with coaches at clubs near where you want to work. Ask them directly. It is more reliable than any number currently online, including any we could publish.
How to Decide
- If you are already in golf and want to formalise your coaching — the NGAI or PGA of India certification route is the direct one.
- If you are leaving Class 12 and want a qualification that works inside and outside golf — the three-year B.Sc. gives you a degree as well as the coaching training.
- If you want the business of golf rather than the teaching of it — the one-year Diploma in Golf Management is the narrower, faster option, but it is a diploma and not a degree.
Entry to both of our programmes is 10+2, Any Stream, the next intake is Academic Year 2027, and the fees are published in full — ₹2,50,000 a year for the B.Sc. and ₹1,00,000 for the Diploma, exclusive of residential costs. If something you need is not on the page, ask us and we will give you the figure rather than an estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a golf coach in India?
Through certification, historically. The National Golf Academy of India, which the Indian Golf Union runs, is the official body for certifying golf teaching professionals here, and the PGA of India also certifies instructors. Both award graded certifications rather than degrees. From the 2027 academic year there is also a university route — a three-year B.Sc. in Golf Performance and Coaching awarded by Mind Power University, Bhimtal.
Do I need to be a good golfer to coach golf?
A playing background helps, in the way it helps in any sport, but it is not the entry requirement for either route. The NGAI and PGA certifications test teaching competence. The B.Sc. requires 10+2 in any stream. Coaching and playing are different skills, and the best players are not automatically the best teachers.
What is the average salary for a golf coach in India?
We have not found a reliable published figure, and we would rather say so than repeat a number from a page that invented one. Pay varies enormously between a club assistant, an academy coach with a full junior programme, and a teaching professional with a reputation. Ask coaches at clubs near you what the range is — that is better data than anything currently online.
Is there a golf degree in India?
There has not been. Golf here has been taught through academy certifications, and searching for golf courses in India returns academies and clubs rather than colleges. A three-year B.Sc. in Golf Performance and Coaching and a one-year Diploma in Golf Management, both awarded by Mind Power University, Bhimtal, open for the Academic Year 2027 intake.
