Sports Courses After 12th in India: Every Option, and What They Cost

Sportal Corporate Editorial•October 23, 2026•11 min read

Degrees, diplomas and certificates you can start straight after Class 12 — what each one is, who it suits, what it leads to, and the fees, published rather than available on request.

Search for sports courses after Class 12 and you will find a great many pages that list course names, say the Indian sports industry is growing, and then ask you to fill in a form to find out what anything costs. This guide is the other way round. It names the options honestly, says who each one actually suits, and prints the fees.

One thing to settle first, because it stops a lot of people before they start: you do not need to have played a sport seriously, and you do not need to have taken Physical Education as a subject in Class 12. Every programme described below is open after 10+2 in any stream — Science, Commerce or Arts.

The Five Routes After Class 12

Almost everything on offer in India falls into one of five groups. They differ in length, in what they qualify you to do, and by roughly a factor of ten in price.

  • B.P.E.S. — Bachelor of Physical Education and Sports. Four years. Trains you to work with athletes and students: coaching, teaching, training, performance.
  • B.S.M. / BBA in Sports Management. Four years, or three at some universities. Trains you to run the business around sport: marketing, sponsorship, events, operations.
  • B.Sc. in Sports Science or Sports Analytics. Three to four years. The scientific and data side — physiology, biomechanics, performance data.
  • Specialist degrees such as golf, fitness or sports journalism. One to three years, narrower, and only worth it if you are certain of the sector.
  • Diplomas and certificates. Six months to a year. Fast and cheap, but they are not degrees, and that difference matters later.

Can Commerce or Arts Students Do Sports Management?

Yes. This is probably the most common question asked about sports management after Class 12, and the answer is simply yes — any stream, no entrance exam at most private universities, no requirement to have played competitively. A Commerce background is in fact a mild advantage on the management side, because sponsorship and ticketing are commercial problems before they are sporting ones.

Maths is not compulsory for sports management. It is worth having if you are heading towards sports analytics, where you will meet statistics properly, but it is not an entry requirement for a management degree.

Degree or Diploma? The Decision That Costs People Later

A one-year diploma is tempting: cheaper, faster, and it gets you into the industry sooner. For some people it is genuinely the right call — particularly if you already have a degree, or you want to test the sector before committing four years.

But be clear about what you are buying. A diploma is not a bachelor’s degree. It will not qualify you for a government teaching post, it will not admit you to most master’s programmes, and a number of employers filter on the word "degree" before a human reads your application. People discover this two or three years in, when they try to move up and find the door is shut. If a bachelor’s qualification might matter to you later, check that before you choose, not after.

What These Courses Actually Cost

This is the part most guides leave out. Private sports and business programmes in India commonly run ₹3,00,000–₹8,00,000 a year, and the figure is frequently not published at all — you are asked to enquire, which makes comparing two institutions almost impossible.

For reference, here is what ours cost, in full. The B.P.E.S. is ₹30,000 per semester, ₹60,000 a year. The B.S.M. is ₹50,000 per semester, ₹1,00,000 a year. Both run four years. Living on campus, accommodation and food together, is ₹83,400 a year four-sharing.

Whatever you are comparing, insist on three numbers before you apply anywhere: the tuition per year, the residential cost per year, and the one-time charges at admission. An institution that will give you all three without a phone call is telling you something useful about how it will treat you for the next four years.

Where Each Route Leads

  • B.P.E.S. — school physical education teacher, coach, strength and conditioning, academy and grassroots roles. The public-sector teaching route is the most secure destination in Indian sport.
  • B.S.M. — club and franchise operations, sponsorship and brand partnerships, event management, sports marketing agencies, federations.
  • Sports science and analytics — performance analysis with teams, fitness and rehabilitation, data roles with clubs and broadcasters.
  • Specialist degrees — the sector they name, which is the point and also the risk.

A realistic note: very few people in Indian sport are paid to play. The jobs are around the athlete — teaching, coaching, running clubs, selling sponsorship, analysing performance. A sports degree is a route into that economy, not a route onto the field.

How to Choose, in Three Questions

  • Do you want to work with athletes, or run the business around them? That single question separates B.P.E.S. from B.S.M. more cleanly than any brochure.
  • Who awards the degree, and where is it actually taught? If the awarding university and the teaching site are different places, ask why, and ask to see the campus.
  • What does a full year cost, including accommodation and one-time charges? If nobody will tell you before you apply, treat that as information in itself.

Our Programmes, Briefly

Sportal runs the B.P.E.S. and B.S.M. as four-year degrees, a three-year B.Sc. in Golf Performance and Coaching, and a one-year Diploma in Golf Management. All are awarded by Mind Power University, Bhimtal, and taught on the university campus in the Kumaon hills — the same institution that awards the degree, which is not true of every programme you will compare them against. Entry is 10+2 in any stream and the next intake is Academic Year 2027.

Every fee is published on the fee structure page, including residential and one-time charges, and the full prospectus is downloadable without filling in a form. If a number you need is missing, ask us and we will give you the figure rather than an estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which course is best after 12th for sports?

It depends on which side of sport you want to work on. If you want to work with athletes and students — coaching, teaching, training — the B.P.E.S. is the four-year degree for that. If you want to run the business around sport — marketing, sponsorship, events, operations — it is the B.S.M. or an equivalent BBA in Sports Management. Both are open after 10+2 in any stream.

Which course is best in sports?

There is no single best course, and any page that names one without asking what you want to do is guessing. The honest filter is three questions: do you want to work with athletes or run the business around them, who awards the degree and where is it actually taught, and what does a full year cost including accommodation and one-time charges.

Can I do sports management after 12th commerce?

Yes. Sports management is open after 10+2 in any stream, and a Commerce background is a mild advantage on the management side, because sponsorship, ticketing and rights are commercial problems before they are sporting ones. Maths is not required.

Is a diploma in sports management after 12th enough?

It is enough to get into the industry, and not enough for some things you may want later. A diploma is not a bachelor’s degree: it will not qualify you for a government teaching post or admit you to most master’s programmes. If a degree might matter to you later, check that before you choose rather than after.

Not sure which degree fits?

The career matcher takes about two minutes. It asks what you want to spend your days doing, rather than what you scored.

It asks for a name and mobile number partway through, so a counsellor can follow up.
